(WMC) -

Quaker Oats issued a voluntary recall for granola bars that may be contaminated with Listeria.

An ingredient supplier distributed sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with the bacteria. Those sunflower seeds may have been used in Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Quaker said the vast majority of the potentially contaminated products were not distributed, but a small quantity of products were sent across the United States.

The recalled products include:

  • 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Chocolate Nut Medley with UPC code 30000 32241 and best before dates of 10/16/2016 and 10/17/2016
  • 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Yogurt, Fruit and Nut with UPC code 30000 32243 and best before dates of 10/10/2016 and 10/11/2016

No other Quaker products are involved in the recall.

Customers who bought either of the products involved are asked to throw them out or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
