One of North Mississippi's hidden gems is using their talents and abilities to lift the spirits of their community and each other.

The Como Elementary School choir is filled with more than 60 fourth and fifth grade students who sing for many different reasons. Reasons ranging from the love of singing to the joy of music to music as an escape all encompass this band of little singers.

Ten-year-old choir member Bridget Bowden is a heart patient at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. She had her first heart surgery at 7 years old and said singing helps her through it all.

"I sing church songs so I think about Jesus," Bowden said.

But these young stars help more than just each other. The choir travels to churches and nursing homes to sing to the community.

Choir Director Rickey Raine said he could not be prouder of the students. He plans to keep teaching them to sing, to face their fears, and to express themselves in music.

"I want to continue to be able to shape them and help them grow," Raine said. "Not only in the elementary choir, but for years to come."

As for Bowden, she is still being treated at Le Bonheur and for now. She said she will keep on singing her way through it.

"Because I like to sing," Bowden said.
