MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Investigators are looking into suspicious activity at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Police received reports of two newly dug or disturbed graves in the cemetery. There have been no new burials in the cemetery in the last 15 years. In fact, previous owners abandoned the cemetery and volunteers now take care of the grounds.

After investigating, MPD said no new bodies were discovered at the cemetery.

Police have put a black barrier up where they have been focused all day.

As neighbors arrived home and found out what was happening, they said it bothered them.

"I had just gotten in from work and I was like 'what is going on?' and it startled me," Cynthia Garrett said.

Detectives arrived in full force, put up a black portable wall, and brought in a crime scene truck. Yellow tape surrounded the area in what appeared to be the center of their investigation.

"We're going to investigate if there's foul play or something squirmy going on," Memphis Police Department Information Officer Louis Brownlee said. "Looks as if someone may have been digging and may have placed something in the earth, but we don't know at this time."

In 2011, a known prostitute's body was discovered shot and dumped at this same cemetery. It's the same cemetery where families have been complaining about its poor maintenance.

"You hate to hear of someone disturbing the last resting place of someone's loved one," Brownlee said.

Neighbors said it is a frightening situation.

"Real scary, like if I didn't have to work tonight, I'll sleep on the couch right here," Garrett said.
