LITTLE ROCK, AR (WMC) -

A missing father and children have been found safe in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Samuel Dowden and his 4- and 2-year-old daughters had been missing since Saturday.

They went to Sardis, Mississippi, to visit the children's grandfather.

The young girls' mother called police when they did not return home for one girl's birthday party.

Police said Dowden did not make it home because his vehicle was repossessed. Police found him and the girls panhandling in Little Rock.

“He just loves his children. I had no idea though that he was going to keep them,” Dowden’s uncle Willie Dowden said. “He said I hadn't seen these children in 5 months and I love my children.”

Family said Dowden was visiting Sardis for more than a week to celebrate the birthday of his youngest daughter Madelyn.

“I was speaking to them every day,” the children’s mother DeAngela Jackson said. “They'll call every day. He'll send a picture every day.”

Jackson said Dowden told her he was driving to Little Rock with the girls and was planning to meet her at a police station there.

“I was there a night at the police station in Little Rock, waiting on him,” Jackson said. “(He) never showed up. His phone stopped going to voicemail and it was completely disconnected.”

Family said the last time they saw them was driving away.

They never went; he just kept on going,” Willie Dowden said. “He's a great father; he just wanted the kids.”

Deputies said no charges are expected because both parents share custody of the children.

“It's a horrible situation; I wouldn't wish this on any parent,” Jackson said.
