MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A parent of a student at White Station Elementary school brought a gun onto campus and was arrested Wednesday.

It happened around the time students were being dismissed from class. The school went on lockdown as police searched the suspect's car.

Shelby County Schools said the school notified parents of what was going on.

SCS said the parent had the gun in his vehicle, which was on campus.

"I am just really shocked for this area," Roosevelt Brooks said.

Memphis Police Department said Kristopher Jackson, 31, is the man who brought the gun on campus.

In the police report, officers said they knew Jackson would be in the area at that time. When detectives saw him, they decided to try to take him into custody while his car was parked in the line in front of the elementary school. That way, they could avoid a chase or harm to any detectives.

As detectives approached his car, Jackson tried to reverse the vehicle but hit the car behind him.  Detectives then used their batons to smash his passenger window in order to prevent anyone in the area from being seriously injured.  Detectives then arrested him.

"I feel like that would be very scary for the kids to be on lockdown like that," Molly Cook said. "To know what is going on and what they are seeing."

Memphis police said Jackson had outstanding warrants for aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, possession of a firearm during a felony, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

"I know White Station and they are very cautious and aware," Brooks said.
