MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

This year is the 27th year for the Rochelle Stevens Olympian Celebration! It's an event designed to give young athletes a chance to be scouted for scholarships to some of the best colleges in the country.

This year's event will be held on the track field at St. George's Independent School in Collierville.

Memphis' own Olympic gold medalist, Rochelle Stevens, was once awarded 20 full scholarships to run track. She said the Rochelle Stevens Olympian Celebration is her way of giving back.

"There are so many scholarships available for our youth and this is just one of my avenues to be able to reach other athletes that are aspiring to go to college," she said.

Each year the invitational also gives Olympic hopefuls an opportunity to compete and shine.

"My main objective is for the next track star to win some of these at the Olympic Games, because 20 years ago I won the gold in Atlanta and I'm looking for someone to follow in my footsteps," Stevens said.

The track celebration is open to people of all ages from 2-75 with events in relay, shot put, discus, and long jump.

Throughout her career Stevens has been a champion for health and wellness.

She even has a street named in her honor in Orange Mound. It crosses in front of her alma mater, Melrose High School. The road is named Olympian Rochelle Stevens Avenue.

"If you are lazy and sitting around, then you will perform like that, but if you get involved in sports, you will find out that you will become a much better person," Stevens said.

She is excited about the summer Olympic games in Brazil and, as always, she is rooting for the home team.

"Of course everyone likes Usain Bolt, but I'm hoping an American can step up to the plate like Justin Gatlin or one of our great sprinters and bring home the gold," she said. "Just snatch it up and bring it back."

The 2016 invitational is Saturday, May 28. For more information click here.
