A man faces a criminal charge of negligent homicide in the death of his girlfriend.

According to Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Johnathan Edmaiston and his girlfriend, Morgan Depriest, argued Thursday night.

Neighbors said the pair recently moved into the neighborhood with their infant son.

Thursday night, Edmaiston wanted to go to the racetrack. Depriest wanted him to stay home and watch a movie.

Edmaiston said he got into his car and started to back out of the driveway. He then put the car in drive and started to drive off.

As he pulled away, Edmaiston said Depriest jumped on the back of his car while it was going 18-20 miles per hour. She then fell off the car, hitting her head on the pavement.

Edmaiston stopped the car, got out, immediately called 911, and started CPR.

"The person was lying in the street and there was a bunch of people around her," neighbor David Reeve said. "They were doing CPR and what not trying to help her. That was just really sad."

Depriest was pronounced dead on the scene. Edmaiston is charged with negligent homicide in her death.

"I feel really terrible," neighbor Nick Aryan said. "That little baby that they--the baby was outside and it was just devastating."

On Friday her family came to gather her belongings.

Now the man she loved is behind bars charged with criminally negligent homicide.

"He has nothing to look forward to but prison, if they find him guilty," Reeve said. "He's pretty young."
