An 8-month-old died after she was left in a car in Grenada, Mississippi, Thursday. Family and friends of the child gathered together Friday to remember her.

Witnesses told police that 8-month-old Shania Rihanna Caradine was left unattended inside a car outside a business on Scenic Loop 333. The child's father is now charged with murder, and a family friend said he disagrees with the charges.

Police said her father, Joshua Lewis Blunt, left Shania inside the car. He said he went into work for a period of time and forgot the child was in the car.

"Really, really hurt. It really crushed me," Stanly Burl said.

Shania was taken to the hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, for treatment. Medical staff tried to save her life, but she died in the hospital.

Burl said it was hard to deal with learning of the child's death. He said Burl and his girlfriend, Candice Caradine, had been trying to have a child for a while. They'd had two miscarriages before Shania's birth.

Burl called Shania the couple's miracle.

"This was really special to them to have a baby," Burl said. "They even moved to a better neighborhood so they could have a better place to raise the baby. That shows nothing but love."

He said the child's death was nothing but a terrible accident.

"I know they love that child, and I know both their parents," Burl said. "I've known them since they were kids. It's a really sad and hurtful thing."

Blunt is in jail on a $250,000 bond.

The Grenada Police Department released the following statement Friday:

The Grenada Police Department is saddened because of this death. The Grenada Police would  like to caution parents to check their vehicles to insure that children are not left inside unattended during the hot summer months.

This is the second time a child has been killed in a hot car in just a matter of weeks.

A mother in Madison County left her baby in the car while she went to work and later found the child dead when she went to day care to pick him up. That death was ruled an accident.

Burl said it was an accident for this child as well.

"I just think everyone should be treated the same," Burl said.
