When the University of Memphis hired Tubby Smith to be its new Head Men's Basketball Coach last month, it knew it was getting one of the most well respected coaches in all of college basketball.
Now there's even more reason for respect.
Smith is being honored for his humanitarian efforts by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as winner of the prestigious Manny Jackson Award Human Spirit Award.
The Tubby Smith Foundation, founded in 1988, raised more than $1.5 million in the first five years to fund youth initiatives such as playgrounds, children’s hospitals, schools, youth camps, and more.
Smith has continued his Foundation at each coaching stop, from Minnesota, to Georgia, Texas Tech, and now Memphis.
Chris Paul and former NBA Star turned analyst Jalen Rose are the other Manny Jackson Honorees.
They'll be saluted at a hall of fame reunion dinner September 8 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
