Annual 'Sea of Blue' honors fallen officers

Memphis Police Department will conduct its annual Memorial Day "Sea of Blue" to commemorate and honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

The "Sea of Blue" will begin at the parking lot of Tiger Lane at Liberty Bowl Stadium on Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m. An opening ceremony at 7:15 p.m. will kick off the procession.

The opening ceremony will include a presentation of Colors and the National Anthem, prayer, opening remarks by MPD Interim Director Mike Rallings, Fraternal Order of Police, and West TN Concerns of Police Survivors. It will also include a selection by the MPD's Peace Makers.

At 7:45 p.m., the procession will proceed South on East Parkway, West on I-240, North on I-240, then East on I-40, West on Sam Cooper Boulevard, South on East Parkway, and will conclude at Tiger Lane.

The "Sea of Blue" consists of law enforcement officers from various law enforcement agencies traveling in procession on a route with blue lights illuminated on their cruisers. This light display is a visible sign of honor and in memory of the fallen officers within the law enforcement community.

"This event serves as a reminder to every law enforcement officers of the dangers that our profession holds and the ultimate sacrifice made by officers killed in the line of duty," Rallings said. "As we prepare for this Memorial 'Sea of Blue', please pray for the families of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and for the continued safety of the many men and women who serve our communities, cities, states, and this nation."
