MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The Memphis Grizzlies have offered the head coaching job to David Fizdale, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Fizdale is currently an assistant coach with Miami Heat. He has never been a head coach in the NBA.

The search for a new coach began earlier this month when Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace announced Dave Joerger would not return as head coach for the 2016-2017 season.  A few days later, the Sacramento Kings named Joerger as their new head coach. He signed a four year, $16 million contract.

Fizdale was hired by Miami Heat as an assistant coach in 2008.  He won two NBA Championship titles with the Heat.  Before that, he was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks and the Golden State Warriors between 2003 and 2008.

ESPN's Marc Stein is reporting that Fizdale impressed Grizzlies management enough in his first interview to earn a face-to-face with team owner Robert Pera.

Fizdale is highly regarded for his work in Miami where he worked with LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade.

Stein also said former Pacers head coach Frank Vogel was offered an interview with Pera, but he turned it down and accepted a job with Orlando.
