MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Fire investigators found a body inside a home after extinguishing a house fire early Thursday morning.

Firefighters rushed to the burning one-story house on Fairlane Drive. The fire was so powerful that it tore off part of the house and broke several windows.

While searching, investigators found the body of a man on the bedroom floor. His name and age have not been released.

"It was sad. It was sad," neighbor Darron Banks said. "You know we've seen the fire from over here."

Neighbors are still in disbelief over what happened. They said the man who lived in the home kept to himself. Although investigators have not released the name of the individual who died in the fire, neighbors believe it was the homeowner.

"Oh, he was a good person," Rene Craighead said. "He never bothered nobody--mind his business, go to the store, come back."

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but investigators believe it started in the bedroom.

The home did not have a working smoke detector. It's a key detail that fire officials said might have saved a life.

"If I would of knew, I would of kicked the door open to help him," Craighead said.

All Memphis residents can apply for a free smoke alarm here or by calling (901)636-5650.
