A routine traffic stop ended in arrest when investigators found a large pile of drugs in a car.

According to the police report, a detective saw a grey Dodge Charger tailgating cars going in the same direction on Highway 78 near Shelby Drive. The detective stopped the car and asked the driver, Luis Miguel Montoya Villagomez, to get out of the car.

Villagomez complied. The detective learned that Villagomez had a suspended license due to traffic violations in Oklahoma. Another detective then asked Villagomez if he could search his car, and Villagomez said yes.

The detective found six plastic bags filled with crystal meth hidden inside a speaker. The drugs weighed six pounds in total.

"For us to have been able to take off six pounds that is destined from Memphis," Mark Tellerhall with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. “It is going to make quite a tremendous impact on the local consumption of methamphetamine."

Authorities said Villagomez was bringing the meth from Atlanta. Law enforcement also seized a handgun and several bullets. Now, Memphis neighborhoods are a little safer.

"This was something that was going to hit our streets and something that would have added to our problem," Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham said.

Villagomez was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a weapon, and driving on a suspended license. His bond is set at $3 million.
