MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

With school coming to an end, a Memphis mother, and the City of Memphis, is working to get more funding to send more children to summer camps.

Allison Fouche works in the Mayor's Office, but more importantly she's a mother of three.

"I understand as a parent how hard it is to find places for kids to go during this summer," Fouche said.

That's why she's working to raise money so more children can take part in the city's summer camps.

The city needs people to chip in because a donor who previously provided enough money to send 1,000 kids to summer camp was not able to provide that service this year.

At $162 per child, it's a cost Recreation Program Manager Angela Hill knows is out of reach for some parents.

"We're looking to really get some funders to come in and sponsor kids so they stay off the streets," Hill said.

Some donations have already rolled in. Several people have already given hundreds of dollars each. More money is needed to make sure children can experience fun physical activities like swimming, but educational ones like reading too.

"We have to work together to build a safer environment for our children," Fouche said.

Summer camps start June 13. If you would like to donate, you can call (901) 636-4203 or visit parks.memphistn.gov.
