CLEARWATER, Fla. – Memphis worked its way to a 9-5 win over UConn to force a rematch but couldn’t keep the bats hot and lost 5-0 to end the season in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Tigers (22-39) exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first inning of Saturday’s first game and went on to score nine runs over the first three innings.
The Memphis offense blasted four doubles, two triples and two homers and was backed by a career-long outing by Drew Crosby in his first career start. The sophomore lefty tossed four innings and allowed just one run on five hits.
In the second game of the day starting pitcher Jonathan Bowlan pitched a career high seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits.
Jake Overbey led the team in hitting throughout the week with a .357 average, five hits and four runs driven in.
Memphis won three straight games for just the second time this season after dropping the tournament opener.
