MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Memphis resident caught a man who escaped Memphis Police Department custody Sunday.

Memphis Police Department identified the suspect as Pablo Cruz.

Justin Allen said he was sitting in his house when he saw Cruz walking down the street. He called Cruz over and invited him inside his home.

“When I saw the handcuffs, it dawned on me that this guy might be the one that escaped," Allen said.

Once inside, Allen gave Cruz a drink and had a peaceful conversation with him. During the conversation, Allen pretended to try and help Cruz get out of handcuffs, but in actuality he was simply stalling.

Memphis police officers arrived and took Cruz back into custody without a fight. Cruz now faces aggravated burglary, felony escape, and theft charges.

Allen said the whole ordeal was scary, but he said it's something he would do again to protect his neighborhood.

“It’s the right thing to do, because ain't no telling what he could have done," Allen said. "People be walking children around--ain't no telling.”

MPD said they initially caught Cruz running away from a home with stolen goods. Cruz escaped custody while being escorted into 201 Poplar.
