Mississippi State guard Malik Newman will transfer.

The team confirmed Newman’s intent to transfer via head coach Ben Howland on Twitter.

MSU landed Newman, the top shooting guard prospect in the country, in 2015 when Newman chose the Bulldogs, his father’s alma mater, over Kentucky.

Newman started 21 games for the Bulldogs in 2015-16 and struggled for the most part, scoring 11.3 points per game. He did win SEC Freshman of the Week in December after a 20-point performance.

The Jackson, Mississippi, native previously declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft, but will instead stay in school, albeit not at Mississippi State.

Newman will have to sit out his sophomore year per NCAA rules while he transfers.
