FORREST CITY, AR (WMC) -

A 35-year-old man was hospitalized after being hit by a police car and later died.

"I would like to know something. I'm trying to find something out,” Grant Long said.

Long’s nephew, Derrick Long, was fighting for his life in the hospital until he died Wednesday morning.

St. Francis County Sheriff Bobby May said the incident started when Long drove off during a traffic stop and was chased by deputies. They said Long then got his vehicle stuck in someone’s front yard and took off running.

As deputies searched the area, May said Long ran into the road and was struck by a deputy’s vehicle.

May said Long was found with more than 100 Hydrocodone pills in his possession.

Long said there are still questions that remain unanswered.

"It still does not explain why he's in the hospital right there fighting for his life,” Long said before his nephew's death.

Long said his nephew had a broken hip and no brain activity in one side of his brain. He underwent surgery Monday to try to pump blood back into his brain.

"One side of the tissues in his brain is gone,” he said.

Derrick Long is a father of two.

"He told me, ‘I want to see my dad,’” Grant said of his great-nephew. “I didn't want him to see his dad in that position."

Long said the family now wants answers to why his nephew is on life support after a car chase.

"A person could never do so much wrong that you have to hit him with a vehicle,” he said.

The sheriff said the deputy is still on duty, but state police have been called in to investigate.
