MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

CrossFit gyms across the Mid-South spent Memorial Day sweating it out to honor a man who gave his all for our country.

The special workout, called the "Murph Challenge," is a 1-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and then another 1-mile run.

The intense workout is an effort to honor U.S. Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005.

Participants said remembering Murphy by doing something he loved is a tradition that humbles them and allows them to dedicate a bit of pain and sweat to a man who gave everything for freedom.

"It's awesome. I do it every year," Mariano Weter said. "I look forward to it. It's a big day for me, personally, being a veteran."

"It's an honor to be able to just do something in memory of someone who has served our county and lost their life for us," CrossFit coach Brandi McGoldrick said.
