MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A man was stabbed to death by the man he was trying to break up with Monday afternoon.

Police said the victim, 23, went to a home in the Parkway Village neighborhood to retrieve his things. While there, the victim and suspect, 30, got into an argument that turned physical.

"Good people, that's why I say it was shocking," neighbor Lillian McKay said.

Neighbors are still trying come to terms with what happened at a nearby home when police said the older man stabbed the younger man multiple times while they were in the process of breaking up at the home in the 2900 block of Knight Road.

"They said that he came over there and was fighting," McKay said. "Said guy came over there, jumped on the mom, and beat the son with a baseball bat."

The victim’s mother drove him to the Delta Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save him. For the neighbors living in this tight knit community, they are shocked and don't understand how something as simple as a breakup could end in a holiday tragedy.

"That's everyday, everyday that happens everyday," McKay said.

The suspect was taken into police custody. We are still waiting for the next of kin to be properly notified. After notifications have been made, we will begin to learn more about the victim.
