Biker Dad: Indian motorcycles coming to Memphis

How long has it been since there was an Indian motorcycle dealership in Memphis? So far I haven't been able to nail that down exactly. There certainly hasn't been an Indian dealership in the modern era of the motor company, since it was bought by another company, Polaris. Indian is the oldest American made motorcycle. But that's about to change.

The company started in 1901, two years before Harley Davidson. It went bankrupt in the 50s and struggled through decades of near non-existence. But since Polaris, who also makes Victory Motorcycles, bought the company in 2011, the brand has been surging. If you want to buy one in Memphis though, tough luck--for now.

Frank Barton, who owns Barton Powersports in West Memphis, Arkansas, confirmed he's opening a new Indian store at 5715 Mt. Moriah Road. Barton said the new store will open mid-September. He'll be selling Polaris products and Victory motorcycles at the Mt. Moriah location as well.

Indian and Victory are still the little guys compared to Harley Davidson, king of the hill when it comes to sales. But having a dealership that sells Indians and Victories on this side of the river, where there are 3 Harley dealerships, is a significant move.
