Man arrested after riding stolen lawnmower down street

It's a strange choice for a getaway vehicle.

Memphis police said a man is behind bars after officers saw him riding a Snapper Lawnmower down the highway. But, it was where he supposedly got the lawnmower that police said landed the man in jail.

"Kind of an interesting situation," Reverend Paul Scheirer of Raleigh United Methodist Church said.

Police said Tempton Land, 44, was seen riding the lawnmower on Austin Peay Boulevard near Old Austin Peay on May 25. Police stopped him and gave him a ticket for driving the lawnmower on a city street.

The Snapper Lawnmower was towed to the city lot.

While the Snapper sit in the city lot, Sheirer said the church had to cut its yard with a borrowed lawnmower since theirs had been stolen.

The following day, a report was filed by the church with police saying someone had stolen its Snapper Lawnmower. The serial number matched the one in the city lot.

According to police, the thief removed panels of siding on the church in order to break in and steal the mower.

Sheirer said he forgives Land for stealing the mower. Church members said when Land is released from jail, he is welcome to come back to the church if he would like to worship.

Meanwhile, the church plans to make the property safer in order to protect its property.

"We try to keep the building as secure as possible, but you never know what's going to happen," Sheirer said.

Land was arrested and charged with theft of property.

He is in jail on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled in court June 2.
