As summer begins, it's time to explore all Memphis has to offer on the weekend!  Here are some ideas for your weekend.


Italian Fest 

When I was in high school, all of my friends would talk about Italian Fest. The food! The music! The games! The food! There's a lot to love about this festival, celebrating 25 years of all things Italian.

Check out cooking demos, bocce ball competitions, grape stomping parties, wine races, art, crafts, and so much more. Tickets are $8 for Thursday and $10 on Friday and Saturday. Children 12 and under get in free! The festival takes place at Marquette Park, but free parking is available at Hilton Corporation with a shuttle every 15 minutes.

Night at the Lorraine 

Celebrate history while supporting the National Civil Rights Museum. Step back in time before the 1970s with an evening of food, music and fun, all while paying homage to the fatal shot fired at Lorraine Motel 48 years ago.

The event will feature food inspired by iconic Memphis restaurants, live music and dancing, a silent auction, and more. Head to the Lorraine on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $75.

Friends Trivia Brunch 

No one told you life was going to be this way. So laugh it out with some Friends trivia at a with Cerrito Trivia. Monicas, grab your Rachels, Chandlers, Joeys, Phoebes, and Rosses and make a reservation for the competition. Go Team Monica!

Guarantee your spot by making a free reservation, and get ready to compete starting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Remember, transponster is not Chandler's job, nor is it a word.

Squad Up Youth Rally 

With the number of homicides continuing to climb, Memphians are taking peace into their own hands. This rally will concentrate on decreasing gang violence among teens and adults in an attempt to persuade them to make wiser decisions.

The event will feature inspirational speakers, food, music, poetry slams, and more. Let's tackle this together, starting Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bridges.

A Day of Merrymaking 

For the fourth year in a row, the family-friendly day of fun is back at Overton Park! The event brings food, art, music, and more for families (dogs included) at the Greensward.

Head to Overton Park for the free event Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Park at the garage in Overton Square and take a shuttle, available every 15 minutes.

Memphis Black Expo 

It's back! WMC Action News 5 is so happy to be a part of this year's Memphis Black Expo, featuring celebrity guests, panel discussions, food festivals, a fashion show and more. The event spans the city of Memphis, so check the website for specific scheduling info. 

This year's expo salutes Egypt, the cradle of civilization. As part of the expo, a team of educators, artists, videographers, photographers, and writers will head to Egypt to embark on an exploration of black excellence in the country. The expo kicks off Thursday and lasts through Monday.

Memphis Redbirds vs. New Orleans 

The Redbirds are back home, and this time they're taking on the Big Easy. Friday, you can watch our favorite AAA team play at Autozone Park--with prizes! The first 1,000 fans will get a "Loud Y'all/Hush Y'all" golf paddle from the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Plus, fireworks! 

If you buy at $30 St. Jude Classic ticket, you'll get a field box ticket and a one-day pass to the golf tournament.

Flying Saucer Memphis Birthday 

Whether or not you've got a coveted plate on the wall, join Flying Saucer as they celebrate their 19th birthday! Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., head to the downtown location for food and cellar beer from around the world.


A Healthier Memphis 

Get ready to get fit! It's a 90 day Community Health Challenge that kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. Weigh in at the Fun & Fitness Festival Sunday at 2 p.m. Then, through the next 90 days, take part in fitness classes, healthy cooking classes, nutrition education, weight loss support, and more. The group will offer also education about weight-related health issues including high blood pressure and diabetes.

After 90 days, the person to lose the most weight can win $700! Head to Breath of Life SDA Church Saturday and Sunday to start your challenge.

Luigi 5k 

Before you indulge at Italian Fest, spend your morning burning calorie at the Luigi 5k! The race starts at 8 a.m. at Marquette Park. With your registration, you'll get free entry into the festival.

Proceeds from the race will help support the children of Holy Rosary School & Parish. Registration is $30 before the race and $35 on-site.

Free Kids Yoga 

Going a little crazy with the kids in the house? Bring them to yoga for some calm, breathing time. Children between 2 and 5 years old and parents are welcome.

The class will take place Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Sumits Yoga. Sign up online to reserve your spot!

Pure Barre at Loflin Yard 

Looking for a fun way to knock out your Saturday workout? Look no further than Pure Barre at Loflin Yard! This free class will be entirely improvised and will take place on the yard's grass lawn.

Afterwards, relax and enjoy drinks and snacks from Loflin Yard's kitchen.

Class starts at 11 a.m., but sign up online first under the workshop tab! Bring a mat with you.

Relay for Life 

If you've never been to or participated in a Relay for Life event, don't miss the opportunity. These events take place all over the country, and Tipton County and Crittenden County are getting in on the fun this weekend.

The event raises money for the American Cancer Society and celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers those who lost loved ones to the disease, and takes action to finish the fight.

Tipton County's event is Friday starting at 6 p.m. and Crittenden County's is Saturday starting at 4 p.m.

Harbortown 5k 

Lace up your running shoes and head to Harbortown for one of Memphis's premier runs along the Mississippi River and through Harbortown neighborhoods.

End the night with food, drinks, and live music. Registration is $30 on race day with the run starting at 7 p.m. The race benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis.


Orpheum Summer Movie Series: Beverly Hills Cop 

Grab the popcorn--the Orpheum Summer Movie Series is back! For the first time, the theatre will show films in two locations, in the Orpheum Theatre and in the new Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education. The kick off film? None other than Beverly Hills Cop. Catch it Friday at 7 p.m. for $8. The film is rated R, so please be mindful if you're thinking about bringing kids.

Dreamgirls by Ballet on Wheels 

Join Ballet on Wheels School and Company as they turn the Broadway hit into a dance production for the whole family to enjoy! And if you haven't heard of Ballet on Wheels, you should check out the African-American pre-professional company.

Check out the performance at the Kroc Center Saturday at 2:30 and at 7:00 p.m. Tickets start at $20.

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic

The King of Funk is here in Memphis!  George Clinton is taking the Parliament Funkadelic to New Daisy Theatre Friday night in celebration of the theater's 74th anniversary. Tickets start at $35.

H*Art Gallery Grand Opening 

H*Art Gallery works with homeless and non-traditional artists, and they're opening their gallery this weekend. H*Art has been providing art classes for homeless artists and veterans at the VA since September 2015. Now, you'll have the opportunity to buy some of their works. Sixty percent of proceeds from each sold piece goes directly to the artist, 10 percent goes to an organization of the artist's choice, and 30 percent stays with the gallery to cover the cost of supplies and other necessities.

Check out the art and meet the artists at St. Blues Guitar Workshop from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

WLOK 40th Anniversary ft. Al Green

Forty years ago, WLOK graced the airwaves as the first black-owned and locally-owned radio station in Memphis. Celebrate the station's 40th anniversary with a concert featuring Al Green, The Brown Singers, The Gospel Four, the Tennessee Mass Choir, and the Stax Academy Alumni Band.

Celebrate the soul music station starting at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Orpheum.
