A Better Mid-South: Chauncy's chance

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Editorial by Tracey Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of WMC Action News 5

Chauncy Black captured our attention recently when his story went viral after a Facebook post.

Black met Matt White in the parking lot of the Kroger on Highland in Memphis.

He offered to carry White's groceries to his car in exchange for a box of donuts.

One thing led to another and White helped Black and his grandmother with groceries and other needs.

He also set up a GoFundMe account that now stands at more than $300,000.

Unfortunately, good things some times bring out the worst in people.

We have now learned Black and his grandmother are in hiding, because people including family members are highly interested in that large sum of money.

I'm thankful for everyone who donated. Please don't stop giving just because some people want to take advantage of a situation.

Tell me what you think of this wonderful and yet concerning set of circumstances, email me at abettermidsouth@wmctv.com or post a message on my Facebook page, A Better Mid-South.

Matt White, thank you for being willing to help your fellow human man, when he needed help the most. You make this A Better Mid-South.
