Tanger Outlets Southaven prepared for possible protest

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) - Protesters are planning to rally outside Tanger Outlets Southaven on Sunday afternoon.

A flyer promoting Black Lives Matter suggests the protesters will gather around 2 p.m. at Tanger.

The flyer asks people to "join us in the fight that's right."

"I would not come out if there's a protest," shopper Natalie Sterling said. "Just because you never know, if they can say it's peaceful, but we live in a broken world and so I don't think I would come out and shop if there was a protest."

Keeping the peace is exactly what Southaven Police Department plans to do.

The police chief said there has been no permit issued for a protest, nor any request for a permit.

But the department is prepared to respond should it happen.

"As long as it's peaceful and nothing out of the ordinary happens. You know I don't have a problem with that," shopper Lakendrick Scruggs said. "No violence or anything like that, that's the most important thing."

"I think it's great for the community that people are active out here and really low what's going on in the world and protesting against it. So I think that's a great thing," shopper Ross Boyer said.

Tanger Outlets Southaven released the following statement about the planned protest.

"We respect the rights of people to demonstrate and voice their opinions in a lawful manner. We are working with local authorities to ensure that any potential activity will not obstruct Tanger customers or employees."
