MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - More than 100 Memphis police officers received promotions Monday.
The 103 officers were promoted to sergeant, but one of them was noticeably unable to accept his award.
Officer Verdell Smith, who was killed in the line of duty, received a posthumous promotion.
Smith's fiancée accepted the award in his honor. She said it is time for the city of Memphis to step up.
"I think we just all need to come together for unity and try to protect our city," Jualonda Green said.
Sixty officers were promoted to lieutenant.
Interim director Mike Rallings said these promotions show the hard work and dedication of MPD.
