SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) - Shelby County officials are taking extra steps to make sure children go to school.
District Attorney Amy Weirich is getting on the phone to talk to families before school starts with the hope to cut down on truancy.
"We're going to be reaching out to families, making sure they are ready to start school. No excuses," Weirich said.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, and Interim Police Director Mike Rallings are also helping make the phone calls before classes start August 8.
