MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Union Avenue gas station is, once again, under fire after several drivers reported having their bank accounts drained after filling up their gas tanks.

It hasn't even been a full year since several people, including multiple WMC Action News 5 employees, found their credit card information had been stolen after buying gas at the Shell station on Union Avenue and Belvedere Boulevard.

Several people took to Nextdoor.com recently, claiming to be victims yet again after frequenting the same store.

"They charged $400 and some odd dollars on my card," said a man who noticed the charges after purchasing gas. "I'm not the only person."

Memphis Police Department said it is not investigating any reports of card skimming there in the past two months, but a gas station manager did receive a complaint from a customer. He said, though, when he looked inside the machine, he found nothing out of the ordinary.

"It's happened before," customer Ken Joplin said. "They really need to pay attention to what's happening to their machines."

In an effort to protect yourself, follow the following tips whenever you pull up to any gas pump:

  • Don't use your debit card at the pump. If you use a credit card, your bank will cover the loss.
  • Check your bank accounts regularly.
  • Choose a pump near the front of the store; it is less likely to have been tampered with.
  • Pay inside.
  • Tug on the card reader before inserting your card. If it pops off or feels loose, it's probably a skimmer.
  • Make sure the color of the card reader matches the color of the plastic surrounding the rest of the machine.
  • Cover the key pad while punching in your PIN.
  • If your card jams or is difficult to insert, use a different gas pump or pay inside.
