GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC) -

Germantown Municipal School District issued an alert after a child was approached by a stranger.

According to a post by the district on Facebook, an unknown adult walked up to a middle school student on Level Creek Drive between Yester Oaks Drive and Windy Oaks Drive.

The police report said the 12-year-old girl was walking home around 3:15 p.m. when a man in a white van, possibly with the word "plumbing" and a thumbs up on the side, pulled up next to her. Just moments after the Houston Middle School student got off her bus, she was approached by the stranger.

The girl said the man asked her if she wanted a ride home and told her he knew her mom. He drove slowly beside her as she tried to walk away.

A man walking his dog stopped and asked the girl if everything was OK, at which point the van left the area.

Those who live in the area are shocked at what happened.

"It blows your mind, and I grew up here," Brandon Jones said.

The girl's mother told police the suspicious man was between 35-40 years old with a Hispanic accent.

"He needs to stay out of this neighborhood, I'd say," Paula Aymett said. "I saw a van down the street that had plumber on it, which from what I understand is the one people are concerned about."

Jones, who has a one-year-old child, said he wants the man caught.

"Hopefully they can catch the guy. I pray that they do, because that's just creepy and weird," Jones said.

The district asked parents to report any suspicious activity to the Germantown Police Department.
