Memphis Police Department had to spend nearly $50,000 in overtime the night of the protest outside Graceland.

MPD called in extra officers from nine separate precincts when protesters threatened to shut down the popular tourists attraction during Elvis week.

The Protests happened outside Graceland on Monday, August 15.

The city released its overtime spending for that night, which amounted to $49,810.

The protest was a largely peaceful one, with only a handful of arrests.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said the overtime expense was worth every penny.

"Memphis Police Department is well-trained," Strickland said. "They know how to handle these situations and each situation will be different, but it was appropriate in this case."

The spending amounts to only a small percentage of the $1.4 million in MPD's budget for overtime each month.

The July protest that closed I-40 for hours resulted in MPD going on a Level III alert for 14 days. MPD spent almost $2 million in overtime pay during those two weeks while officers were not given days off.
