Chicago, IL (WMC) -

For decades, the secret recipe behind Kentucky Fried Chicken has been a trade secret.  The top brass at KFC said the original recipe is locked away in a 770 lb. safe which is guarded by security cameras and alarms.  However, a recent article by the Chicago Tribune shines light on what could be the authentic original recipe.

A reporter was writing a travel story for the Chicago Tribune when he traveled to Corbin, Kentucky, the birthplace of KFC. While he was there, he spoke with the nephew of Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. As they were looking through a scrapbook, they came across a recipe. The nephew claims that it was the original recipe for KFC, but later pulled back on the story.

The Chicago Tribune decided it was best to try the recipe for itself, and after some work, they said it tasted just like the Colonel's Original Recipe.

Here is the recipe:

  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2 tbsp. salt
  • 1/2 tbsp. thyme
  • 1/2 tbsp. basil
  • 1/3 tbsp. oregano
  • 1 tbsp. celery salt
  • 1 tbsp. black pepper
  • 1 tbsp. dried mustard
  • 4 tbsp. paprika
  • 2 tbsp. garlic salt
  • 1 tbsp. ground ginger
  • 3 tbsp. white pepper

One important thing to note: The Chicago Tribune said they had to add MSG to the recipe at the end to truly make it taste like the KFC recipe.
