MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

St. Luke's United Methodist Church has been serving food to families in the University of Memphis area for more than 20 years, but their shelves are low in the pantry and they need your help.

In Tennessee, one in six people struggles with hunger: a reason the work at St. Luke's UMC means so much.

"Because of the number of people that we feed, this is really low for us so we are in desperate need of filling them so that our families can get fed," St. Luke's UMC youth leader Beth Ryan said. "We serve hundreds of families on an emergency need basis."

The pantry shelves are normally stocked with non-perishable items to help feed that need, but right now the pantry is running low.

"We need 16 ounce jars of peanut butter, we need ravioli and chili and soup and canned fruit," Ryan added.

Located at 480 S. Highland Street at the corner of Midland Avenue, they do not ever want to turn away someone who needs a meal.

"Lots of families, lots of single people, all ages and genders and races," Ryan said.

The pantry is putting out the call for anyone who can help to drop off donations at the church to keep their ministry of giving going.

"This church is very community minded in giving and feeds a lot of people, not only out of this pantry on Thursdays, but also on Saturdays for Saturday Supper and Sunday breakfast," Ryan said.
