5 Great Things: MPD recruits, Stax Academy

There is plenty of good news to report in the Mid-South this week. Here are the top five reason why this week was great:

Memphis Police Department recruits new officers

Taking an oath to serve, 24 new recruits for Memphis Police Department officially graduated this week. Soon, they will be hitting the streets, protecting and serving our city.

Bass player for Prince visits Stax Academy

A former bass player for Prince spent time with students at Stax Academy. Nik West met with students at a workshop about music, and also donated a guitar to the academy.

Two new restaurants coming to Midtown

A Florida based oyster bar, The Indian Pass Raw Bar, plans to renovate the former home of Chiwawa on Madison Avenue. The owners hope to open in early December.

Korean BBQ restaurant, DWJ is set to open in Cooper Young in September.

Mid-South athletes at the Summer Olympics

Some Mid-South athletes really made us proud at the Summer Olympics in Rio. Oxford native Sam Kendricks won a bronze medal in men’s pole vault. Jeff Henderson, of McAlmont, Arkansas, won gold in the men’s long jump. Ole Miss alum Brittney Reese won silver in women’s long jump.

Wounded Warrior ride

Disabled Veteran John Townsley will bike almost 3,000 miles in September, hoping to raise $3 million for our wounded heroes.
