MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Mayor Jim Strickland apologized Friday for a major backlog of garage cart requests from city residents.

About 1,200 customers have been waiting for new or repaired carts and the demand has exceeded the number of replacements the city keeps on hand, Strickland explained in his weekly email update.

The backlog has stretched for several weeks, evidenced by the frequent requests for cart service on the city’s SeeClickFix website.

“The buck stops at my desk. I take full responsibility,” Strickland wrote. “That’s an unacceptable level of service from city government, and it is my fault.”

The mayor said a new shipment of garbage carts should arrive in the middle of next week. Solid Waste Management has been authorized to work overtime and weekends to distribute the bins as quickly as possible.

Strickland said 2,000 carts will be kept in reserve from now on to avoid any future backlogs.

“If you’ve been affected by this, I apologize. If you haven’t been affected by this, I still apologize,” the mayor wrote.
