A Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured after being hit by a car early Sunday morning.

SCSO spokesperson Earle Farrell said the deputy was assisting a driver when she was hit by a vehicle on Austin Peay Highway near Brownsville Road.

SCSO Chief Mark Dunbar said Angela Winfrey was recovering at Regional Medical Center with injuries hours after the crash.

"She's got a broken leg--a non-life threatening head injury," Dunbar said.

SCSO released the following statement on their Facebook page:

Winfrey is expected to be OK. Winfrey has been with the department for 17 years.

Dunbar stated the accident happened in a construction zone and the driver stopped to check on Winfrey.

According to SCSO, the driver remained on the scene. There was no alcohol or texting involved. The driver just didn’t see the deputy.

The driver does not currently face any charges.

Neighbors plan to walk with Winfrey through every step of her recovery.

"If you need any help, were going to be here for you. We miss your smiling face! She walked around the neighborhood all the time, and we definitely look forward to her coming back," neighbor Darrel Speight said.
