MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Two people were shot at while driving down the interstate.

Police said a woman and her boyfriend were driving on westbound Interstate 240 between Mt. Moriah Road and Getwell Road when a newer model black SUV pulled alongside them and fired multiple shots, hitting the vehicle and the man.

The couple said they do not know why someone would shoot at them.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to non-critical.

“That's crazy. Memphis, our city is getting worse,” Shaqueria Crump said. “And law enforcement, or somebody needs to do something about it, but it's getting worse every day.”

The 23-year-old woman pulled off at the Getwell exit and pulled into a gas station to get help for her 26-year-old boyfriend.

One Memphian said he is not surprised by the shooting, but said he still feels safe in the area.

“I feel safe because I know there's police officers there,” Stuart Bowden said. “And I'm not making random stops; I may stop for gas. It's just going to be in a well-lit place.”

Police have not released any information on the identity of a possible suspect.
