MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

One person has been killed in a shooting on Hawkins Mill Road, near Frayser-Raleigh Road. The shooting happened at Hawkins Mill Market.

Just before 9 a.m. Monday, officers found the shooting victim and took them to the hospital in critical condition. Police later confirmed the victim died.

Memphis Police Department said the suspect and victim may know each other. The suspect left the scene in a gray SUV.

Some in the area said the place where this happened in a dangerous area.

"I do not like this store, period...at all," Tasha Thomas said. "Always guys hanging around. It's always bad. It's just a bad store. I don't know what's going on inside the store, but every time I come it's a bad feeling."

Thomas said her husband stops at the store often, but she doesn't feel safe.

Her fears became a reality just before 9 a.m. when she said her husband pulled into the Hawkins Mill Market. Her husband became a witness to a dangerous situation where he could have become a victim.

"They said it was a shootout, so I instantly left work and I thought the worst," Thomas said.

Police said they were flagged down by a passerby who told them a man had been shot.

Investigators focused much of their attention on several cars outside the market, including a white Dodge Charger that possibly belonged to an eyewitness.

"When I got here they were like 'who is your husband,' and I told them who he was and they said he's OK, but he was a witness to a shootout here," Thomas said.

Thomas said she thinks this will be her husband's last trip to the store.

"I think after this all that went on or whatever, I think he'll probably pass this store and keep on to the next one down the street," she said.

No one is in custody at this time.
