Southaven Police Department said a car crash caused traffic problems in the area of Church Road and Highway 51 on Monday evening.

The crash caused a gas leak in the area, and officials had to shut down most of Church Road all the way to Interstate 55.

The collision sent a SUV into a gas main, causing it to rupture and gas to leak. The crash happened in front of a shopping center on Church Road.

Customers and employees at the shopping center were immediately evacuated.

Family members of one of the drivers involved in the crash rushed to the scene.

"That's like my cousin who was in it, so I'm like overwhelmed," Tay Lane said. "I don't know. I was in a volleyball game and they told me and I was like 'oh my gosh', had to hurry down here."

Traffic in the area is back to normal after crews worked for hours to get the leak under to control and repaired.
