DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC) -

DeSoto County now sees more heroin overdose deaths than any other county in Mississippi, according to the DeSoto County Coroner's Office.

"Once you use it, you are hooked," recovering addict Meghan Dawkins said.

She said she stopped using four years ago, but relapsed in August.

"After being gone for four years and coming back its bad. It's really bad," Dawkins said. "It's so much more prevalent. I mean, you can basically go to a gas station and ask for it."

Since the drug is now easier to get, Dawkins said it's common to see users pushed to the edge.

"I saw people that were overdosing in the cars at the gas station," Dawkins said. "To decrease these deaths, we need awareness and we also need more access to Narcan."

DeSoto County Sheriff's Department agrees. Deputies are now carrying opioid overdose kits--which contain Narcan.

The overdose kits help bring overdose victims back to consciousness and normal breathing.

Meanwhile, lawyer Melissa Dabar is setting up a support group to help when users need it the most.

"[Heroin users] struggle with extreme amounts of embarrassment, shame, denial, and just being overwhelmed with no resources," Dabar said.

Her group helps connect the addicts with resources that can help them quit.

Those resources are vital to keeping people alive and helping them turn their lives around.

"I'm just so grateful to come back out of that and choose recovery again," Dawkins said.
