Bullies Need Help at Corner Due to Injury

Miss. State suffers injuries in defensive backfield

As the Mississippi State Bulldogs get ready for their weekend opener against South Alabama, the Bulldogs hope to get some key defenders back on the field.

Bullies Head Coach Dan Mullen confirmed starting corner backs Tolando Cleveland and Cedric Jiles suffered significant injuries during the final week of fall camp.

Cleveland will miss the entire season, while Clinton native Jiles will be sidelined until October with a broken arm.

State was already thin at corner, having lost Taveze Calhoun and former East High Star Will Redmond to the NFL.

Dan Mullen adamant in his prediction of what needs to happen now.

"Guys got to step up. We've got to get guys to step up. We've got Maurice Smitherman who's played corner, he's rotating in there. Jamal Peters has got the physical tools to go out there and play some corner, and the young guys have got to just step up and go play."

Kickoff for the Bulldogs and South Alabama is 11 a.m. Saturday in Starkville.
