MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

With heads bowed and eyes closed, the members of Greater New Salem Missionary Baptist Church prayed for the recovery of Shelby County Deputy Angela Winfrey.

The deputy was assisting a driver when she was hit by a car on Austin Peay Highway near Old Brownsville Road.

Tuesday night, her church family spent time praying for her continued recovery.

"She was in excruciating pain. Every second she was crying out in pain," Pastor Troy Wilkins said.

Wilkins spent time with Winfrey in the hospital. He said she made tremendous progress, and was able to take her first steps since the incident on Tuesday.

"Been with her every step of the way. Not only physically but also from a spiritual perspective," said Wilkins.

The church family has been praying for her recovery. It's something they said they know helped make a difference.

"To know she is in the condition she is in and still has positive things to say really warms my heart," Winfrey’s cousin, Cicely Hicks, said.

Hospital officials said Winfrey is still listed as being in critical condition.
