If you can believe a report from a website called TMGcollegesports, the Big 12 may be closer to actually naming the schools on a cut down of its expansion list, and the University of Memphis is on it.
Reporter Mark Blaudschun, who used to be a columnist for the Boston Globe, said there are reports that Memphis, along with 6 to 8 other schools, mostly from the American Athletic Conference, have been sent invitations from the Big 12 to continue their pursuit to join the Power 5 Conference.
That means making another presentation to the league some time in the coming weeks.
Some 20 schools were originally invited to petition the Big 12 for membership.
Blaudschun also writes the league is asking some members to table expansion talks for at least one year.
The Big 12 currently pays its member schools $30.4 million a year.
The Tigers make less than $3 million from the AAC.
U of M Athletic Department officials said they were not aware of the TMGcollegesports report.
While there is some skepticism to be had with the report, East Carolina released a statement after the story came out, saying the school was left off the list for possible expansion.
Memphis officials have been tight lipped on progress of their proposal to enter the Big 12.
The Big 12's Board of Directors meet next in mid-October. It's possible further news in the ongoing expansion saga could be released at that time.
