Memphis in May announces $88M economic impact

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis In May generated millions of dollars for the City of Memphis.

According to an economic impact study by Younger Associates, Memphis In May generated an economic impact of more than $88 million, meaning that much money exchanged hands during the festival.

The festival created, both directly and indirectly, 1,138 local jobs.

More than 93,000 people came from 50 miles away or farther to take part in the festivities, with a total attendance of more than 265,000.  Visitors spent more than $38.3 million in Memphis.

Non-residents who attended the Beale Street Musical Festival spent almost $21 million. Those who attended the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest spent nearly $17 million, and non-residents at the two new Memphis in May events spent more than $478,000.
