MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

More than 1,500 people recently applied to become Memphis police officers.

According to Memphis Police Department, 268 people applied for the 122nd training session, set to begin in mid September.

MPD also said 1,344 applicants applied online for the 123rd session, as a result of their media recruitment campaign. That training session will begin in March 2017.

This marks a significant increase in police applications from previous years. Just over halfway through 2016, MPD has more than 1,500 applicants. Below you'll see the number of applications the department has received each of the past four years:

  • 2012: 561 applicants
  • 2013: 302 applicants
  • 2014: 529 applicants
  • 2015: 661 applicants

MPD has been struggling with a shortage of officers. In April, the department spent $400,000 on an advertising campaign aimed at finding new recruits across Tennessee and in other states.

MPD is currently using the Join the Best in Blue recruiting campaign to get recruits into training classes set to begin in March.

"The Best in Blue campaign has been phenomenal for the Memphis Police Department,” officer Kevin Moore said.

Moore is the lead recruiter for MPD. He said the campaign has brought in more applicants than they could have hoped for.

"What that does, it allows us a larger pool to choose from to select the very best of the best to become the Best in Blue,” he said.

The campaign hasn’t just worked in Memphis. Moore said he’s been surprised by how many applications have come from outside of Shelby County.

Moore also thinks the more convenient and user-friendly online application process has helped boost the numbers.

He said all of this is proof that the $400,000 in tax dollar the city spent on the recruiting campaign was money well spent.

"You're looking at city dollars at its best,” Moore said. “You're looking at money from this campaign, citizens are investing, and we're talking about a great or an excellent return of their investment.”

MPD is accepting applications for the March class through the middle of November. Only the best 100 of them will be selected for the class.
