DeafConnect of the Mid-South, Inc. hopes the inaugural Deaf Family Reunion at Mud Island River Park is the beginning of a new annual tradition.

The group also hopes the relocation to Mud Island will bring in bigger audiences.

The "come-as-you-may" free event is open to everyone, whether you are part of the Deaf Family or simply curious for dancing, sign language, activities for the kids, the Mississippi River Museum, crafts and more.

DeafConnect is a non-profit agency serving Memphis and surrounding areas for needs regarding individuals who are deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing.

The agency provides a multitude of services including interpreter services, career counseling, educational support, social service, medical and legal referrals.

The organization also provides training for businesses, workshops for sign language interpreters and promotes Deaf culture in all forms.

The Deaf Family Reunion, in celebration of Deaf Awareness month, is set for Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Mud Island River Park.

Parking is free at the Front Street Garage and visitors are invited to enter through the north gate.

Organizers encourage you to bring your own food and beverages, even bicycles, bathing suits to frolic in  the fountains and the Great Mississippi River Model, and game balls.

But, MOST importantly, you are invited to have FUN!
