Thieves are on the hunt for opportunities to snatch license plates right off of vehicles. Residents in one Midtown neighborhood are taking additional measures to protect their plates after many were stolen.

Pixie Woodall said her plates were almost stolen off her vehicle. She walked out of the door to her home on Central Avenue and discovered the attempt from the thief didn't go so well.

"The license plate was bent in half," Woodall said.

But, she isn't the only one.

"Two license plates were actually taken off down the street," she said.

Woodall used the website Nextdoor to connect with her neighbors and learned someone was going up and down the street on Sunday looking to snatch license plates off cars.

"You can reach over and touch them sometimes, so it's very easily accessible," Woodall said.

So the neighbors started searching for a way to prevent additional theft attempts.

"Suggestions was that you slice through the sticker, but we've since found out that doesn't make any difference," Woodall said. "It's actually the licenses that they want."

According to several sources, the reasons these thieves target license plates can vary. They may steal a plate to put on a stolen car or they could commit traffic violations and your plate is the one caught on camera.

Whatever the reason, Woodall said she is taking extra precautionary measures.

"I went and got a frame for our license and unless who's ever doing it brings tools to take them off, they can't get them off," she said.

Woodall is hoping the harder the job is for the robbers, the quicker they will give up.
