One busy Memphis intersection is being described by people who live in the area as a “raceway.”

There are red light cameras and a speed limit sign of 45 miles per hours at the intersection of Getwell Road and Shelby Drive. However, residents said many drivers go well over the posted limit.

“They just drive crazy,” Teresa Massey said.

WMC Action News 5 reporters have been to the intersection twice in the past week for live reports.

In one crash, a driver was killed last Tuesday.

“I just try to be real careful myself,” Penny Hunter said.

Memphis Police are processing WMC Action News 5’s request for the number of crashes at the intersection. Meanwhile, Donald Williams, who owns a barbershop nearby, said he sees several crashes there every week.

“I feel like it needs to be a speed zone,” Williams said. “Instead of it being 45, they need to drop it down to 40 or 35.”

Hunter said safety on the road boils down to common sense.

“You got to focus on the road, and no texting,” Hunter said.
