The newly minted Shelby Farms Park is adding a tool to help track down thieves.

Rekenna Frazier and her two daughters came to the park on opening day of the new features. They heard so much about the new additions, they had to see for themselves.

“The park is beautiful,” Frazier said. “It just looks so peaceful and so relaxing.”

Frazier was even more satisfied when she learned that Heart of the Park is working alongside local law enforcement to beef up security.

Soon, visitors like Frazier will be able to see crime-fighting equipment in the parking lot in the form of license plate readers, which will hopefully work to deter thieves.

The license plate reader can allow police to identify a car by its plate at any time of day and take a picture of it, making it easier to track down the thieves.

“I think that's a great idea, so anyone who’s coming out this way to do something they're not supposed to do, they need to know that,” Frazier said.

Park officials will also soon be adding more security cameras, which comes as comforting news for Amy Redditt.

“It would be good. I would feel really comfortable bringing my daughter here by myself,” Redditt said.

As park officials work out their plan to increase safety, they are also urging visitors to lock their doors and not leave valuables in plain view.

“We need a safe environment, especially for the kids,” Frazier said.
