KNOXVILLE, TN (WMC) -

It wasn’t pretty, but Tennessee Volunteers started off the season with a win.

Appalachian State gave the Vols all they could handle, leading from the first quarter until a late touchdown tied it.

Playing from behind, Tennessee got some hard-fought yardage from Jalen Hurd, who pounded the ball for 110 yards on 28 carries.

Quarterback Joshua Dobbs had a rough going, tossing an ugly interception and rushing for -4 yards on nine carries.

A missed Mountaineers extra point in the 2nd quarter ended up being the difference, as the game was pushed to overtime at 13-13.

In overtime, Hurd hopped on a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown. On defense, the Vols knocked down quarterback Taylor Lamb’s pass into the end zone to seal the 20-13 win.

Tennessee will be glad to escape the Mountaineers with a 1-0 record, but things won’t get easier as they take on ACC foe Virginia Tech next week.
