For the 11th year in a row, Memphis is getting together and throwing a block party in the name of peace.

Block Party and Picnic for Peace is an annual event designed to entertain, inform, and employ Memphians.

This year the event will be held September 23-25 at Ed Rice Community Center located at 2907 North Watkins Road.

The three-day event is packed full of great entertainment, food, and opportunities. Health massages, and blood pressure checks will accompany the job opportunities.

"We have live music, food, fun; we have a car show this year," State Representative Antonio Parkinson said. "A majorette competition, we have the prancing Tigerettes who are on the hit show Bring It."

This year's theme is social justice.

The Success in the City forum is hosted by WMC Action News 5's Kontji Anthony, and provides an opportunity for people to voice their concerns about community issues such as police brutality.

"The victims are disproportionately  African-American," Parkinson said. "There is a need for more than a conversation to happen; there is a need for change to happen, because we can't keep going down the same path."

Parkinson said the event is a labor of love, but always a success when families walk away with more awareness.

"We are excited about it," Parkinson said. "The testimonies, they always make us feel good when they come and say 'Man, thank you for doing what you're doing.'"
